General Note
The family name before the revolution was Grenaue or Greneau. They were French Hugenots and came to this country about 1700. The vessel in which they came was called the "Prospero" and her destination was Charleston, S.C. Driven out of their course they came to New York for provisions and stayed. They were iron-workers at Sterling in the Ramapo Valley in 1732, and lived there for five generations.
