The constitution of the Middletown and New Jersey Railway Historical Society, Inc., states that in addition to concerning itself with the Middletown and New Jersey Railway and its predecessors, the Society shall also cover "connecting railroads". Not only was the Erie / Erie Lackawanna, a connecting railraoad but it arguably was the dominant railroad company in Orange County. Two main lines traversed the country and there was a major yard at Port Jervis. In addition there was a number of branches; the Phine Bush Branch, the Montgomery Branch, the Pine Island Branch, the Newburgh Short Cut and the Newburgh Branch.
